Wasn’t sure whether I should write my question to you here or maybe on Facebook…currently reading Catching Readers by Barbara M. Taylor and I have just finished your book about Small Groups (which I LOVED) and feel like I might be getting some conflicting thoughts.
Wanted to ask you because I trust your opinion and expertise. They have small group reading interventions in place for students who are behind and run a three day routine with familiar read, then introduce a new book where the teacher reads from the new book and points out words and strategies they are using. They then do word boxes. On the second and third days, students reread the “new” book with partners and teacher helps coach. Granted, I’m sure there’s more that goes on (since I’m only a third of the way into the book and will be getting into the meat of the lessons), but wanted to know how much reading from a new book has occurred when you did small groups and did the students spend three days in a row ever on the same book? I understand about building fluency and familiarity, but also wanting to push them on…where’s the balance in this? Thanks in advance…
