While in Maine last week, I met with about 400 teachers at the Elks Lodge in Waterville. As part of our work together, we thought about anchor charts we’d make with children this year. Before creating an anchor chart with children, it’s a good idea to think about what it might look like. So we made some samples together. What an engaging process this was! The pictures tell it all.

I would of loved to see pics of all of their wonderful work.
I would love to see more examples of math anchor charts!
Why wouldn’t you create the anchor charts with the students? Rather than creating them ahead of time and making “teacher wall paper”. Isn’t it all about creating meaning for/with the students? If you create the charts with the students directly involved in the process the chart automatically becomes more meaningful to them, they have a sense of ownership. It also teaches and develops understanding of what the expectations are for the classroom and everything in it. Just my wondering.
This was simply an exercise to help teachers visualize the process of making anchor charts. I do recommend creating the charts WITH students! I agree with you totally. This post was about visualizing what you want to put on the anchor chart before making it with your students. Sorry to create any confusion here.

Thanks Debbie! I kinda thought you would want the charts created WITH the children. I just wanted to make sure I didn’t miss something! I love all your books and use both the math and the language arts workstations in my first grade classroom. Thank you for your work!

I read that you recommend putting borders on anchor charts. Why is that?
