What’s on your “next read stack” for summer? Here’s what’s sitting on my bedside table:
- Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand by Helen Simonson- I just finished this one. Such a lovely story. A gentle read.
- Mennonite in a Little Black Dress (A Memoir of Going Home) by Rhoda Janzen- I grew up in PA Dutch Country in Lancaster County, PA. I was friends with several Mennonites, so this one struck a chord!
- What to Wear for the Rest of Your Life: Ageless Secrets of Style by Kim Johnson Gross- I’ve read about 1/3 of this and am very inspired. In fact, I’ve done several “responses to literature” as a result of what I’ve read. More to come…
You must read Saving Cee Cee Honeycutt by Beth Hoffman. I will finish it tonight. It’s so wonderful that I’m going to tell everyone about it.
Thanks for the recommendation. I will definitely look for it. I just started The School of Essential Ingredients. It is a must-read. So beautifully written. I find my self highlighting lines!
I’m behind on my children’s book reading, so I’m in the midst of The Mysterious Benedict Society now. I’m also reading Nelson DeMille’s sequel to The Lion’s Game, The Lion. And I wanna read John Sandford’s newest Prey novel. Loving the crime fiction genre this summer! I just reread Pat Conroy’s Beach Music and will reread The Water is Wide, which I reread every summer before school. Conroy is my fave, and I wish he’d write a novel a year just to keep me excited for summer. (I read South of Broad last summer and may reread it just because.) I’ll have to check out Saving Cee Cee Honeycutt and The School of Essential Ingredients. 🙂
I read The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls. Very insightful and inspiring story of how students rise above and/or in spite of their family lives. Her upbringing is very similar to the lives of my students – chaotic and full of drama and hard times, but surrounded by love.
The Glass Castle is an inspiring book. It was given to me as a gift when I spoke at a WV Reading Conference several years ago. She has a new book, Half Broke Horses: A True-Life Novel. I’ve not yet read it, but I plan to.
