I was browsing my poetry books and wanted to share this one with you. It’s from an anthology called Small Talk: A Book of Short Poems selected by Lee Bennett Hopkins (another of my favorite poets).
What Are Heavy?
by Christina Rossetti
What are heavy? Sea-sand and sorrow.
What are brief? Today and tomorrow.
What are frail? Spring blossoms and youth.
What are deep? The ocean and truth.
Hats off to Christina Rossetti! Reading a poem like this just makes me want to write better and better.
I love Christina Rossetti too. She has a way of peeling off the layers and celebrating the heart of the matter. Thanks for sharing this one!
Oh..I haven’t seen this poem in ages, thank you!
Wow! Only 26 words, yet she says so much!
Oh I do love a short poem. This one is new to me and it’s exquisite. Thank you for sharing. I’ll definitely be using it in my teaching.
